According to a survey conducted by Harris Poll on behalf of Anisa International, 61% of women do not regularly clean their make-up tools... A huge figure considering that the brushes we sometimes use on a daily basis are real nests for germs, dust and other bacteria that end up directly on our face. A real plague because in addition to causing acne flare-ups, unwashed brushes also prevent an efficient application of our make-up! But how to clean your makeup brushes without ruining them? And how often?
Why do you need to wash your makeup brushes?
While brushes can give you a beautiful, even complexion, they need to be cleaned thoroughly to avoid the opposite effect. Just as you take care of your skin, you must take care of these tools if you don't want your skincare efforts to go to waste.
Used daily, they accumulate germs, dust and bacteria that most often thrive in humid environments like the bathroom. And once you put your brushes on your face, these bacteria settle on your skin and the direct result is often acne.
But acne isn't the only issue they can cause, unwashed brushes prevent optimal makeup application and shorten the life of your tools. For example, you won't get the true color of an eyeshadow if your brush is still soaked with other pigments.
Finally, dirty brushes can contribute to irritating your skin. Washing them allows you to have soft, supple bristles.
When should you clean your makeup brushes?
Most dermatologists recommend cleaning foundation and concealer brushes at least once a week to avoid product build-up on the bristles. "Since these brushes are used directly on your face, the cleaner they are, the better," confirms celebrity makeup artist Bobbi Brown in Allure magazine.
When it comes to eyeshadow and eyeliner brushes, the rate is lower. "Brushes that are used around the eyes should be cleaned at least twice a month," continues the expert.

To get rid of foundation, blush, highlighter and any other products you may have applied with your brushes, you don't have to invest in big equipment. Invest in a good bar of natural soap or antibacterial soap, fill a bowl with warm water and you're all set!
Of course, you also need the right touch... So here's how it's done.
- Wet the brush generously.
- Rub it on the wet soap (placed in a bowl for convenience) and lather the bristles.
- Rub the soap-soaked brush into the palm of your hand to make sure the bristles are saturated with soap.
- Rinse thoroughly with clean water, holding the brush for 2-3 seconds to make sure all the makeup is gone. If not, repeat the process.
The right way to dry your makeup brushes
It is necessary, here, to be very careful and to pamper your brushes well. Especially if they are made of natural material or animal hair. First of all, you will have to wring out as much of the hair as possible with your fingers. Be careful not to pull out the hair of the makeup brush. Next, spread a dry towel on a flat surface and place your brushes on it. A mistake not to make would be to hang these brushes upside down. Drying it that way could cause them to lose their original shape. Good to know: In addition to being more ethical, synthetic fiber brushes generally have a much shorter drying time than natural hair brushes.
